Back to School Lunches

Just wondering if anyone out there actually enjoys making lunches for their kids… I don’t hate it when there’s lots of food in the fridge or when all the Tupperware is clean. It’s trying to find the space for all those containers in their lunch bag or when they bring back full yogurt containers that have to be thrown out after they’ve been out of the fridge for so long…those kind of things bug me about making lunches. This week the boys were off at camp so we could practice our morning routine for school next week. My little one is also starting kindergarten so it was also the perfect opportunity not only for him to practice eating his lunches, but also for me to practice making them. I must say the week was successful and the bags came home empty each day with no complaints. Here are a few tips and ideas to help with easy lunch transitions for next week:

1. Talk to your kids. Make a list together of things that they like to eat. When they find things on that list that are in their lunch bags, they feel more involved and that their voice is heard.

2. Have your child help you to prepare and pack their bag. Tell them what they have to eat and when so there are no surprises when they get to school.

3. Make it fun. Provide a variety of colourful and exciting snacks and lunches. Have a schedule but make sure it’s not always the same thing Monday after Monday lol.

4. Keep your fridge stocked with lots of fruits and veggies. Having lots of choices on hand makes it easier for parents to give kids an option so they are more likely to eat what you’ve packed for them.

Remember to keep a positive attitude about packing healthy lunches and it won’t be such a chore. Your child learns good eating habits from you, and they will carry these habits and a positive attitude with them throughout their lives.
